History of the Puskas Arena
The Puskas Arena was officially opened on November 15, 2019 as Hungary’s new national stadium. It was built on the site of the former Ferenc Puskas Stadium, which was demolished in 2017, and its main entrance retains the original brick walls. “The construction of the new Puskas Arena combines the architectural values of the old stadium with the application of the most modern techniques,” said Codina Architectural, the design and construction firm behind its striking metal facade.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin described the 67,000-capacity stadium as “the crown jewel of Hungarian football” and praised the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) for its commitment to building the new stadium.
Like its predecessor, the Puskás Arena stadium is named after legendary Hungarian striker Ferenc Puskás, who won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid. Sevilla won their record seventh UEFA Europa League title in May 2023, beating Roma on penalties at the Puskás Arena. However, the 2026 Champions League final will be the first time Hungary has hosted the final of Europe’s premier club competition.
2023 Final Summary: Sevilla 1–1 Roma (4–1 on penalties)
The stadium also hosted four UEFA Euro 2020 matches, including Hungary’s 1–1 draw with reigning world champions France in Group F and the 2020 UEFA Super Cup between Bayern Munich and Sevilla, which the German team won 2–1.
Located east of Budapest’s city centre, the stadium is just one kilometre from Budapest Keleti Central Railway Station and two kilometres from the historic centre of the Hungarian capital.
The stadium was inaugurated with a friendly match between Hungary and Uruguay, which the visiting team won 2–1. Former captain and current assistant coach Ádám Szállás became the first Hungarian player to score a goal in the new stadium. He reduced the deficit after goals from Edinson Cavani and Bryan Rodriguez gave Uruguay a two-goal lead.
The construction, which was completed between 2017 and 2019, involved the production and installation of around 20,000 square metres of stainless steel wire mesh. The project’s architect and designer, Giorgi Scardelli, wanted to incorporate modern features and techniques while preserving the original building’s distinctive character.
